It’s not the masks and costumes people wear I loathe

but the people, for I’ve been having such a time of it lately

with my telescope trained on the balconies

of  the building opposite to see if I could catch anyone

trifling with anyone’s affections

behind the black sheets of rain and their drapes

so damp and listless.

The curling leaves of my book suggest something but the air is so heavy it’s taking a long time for us to decide upon anything and what the curling leaves suggest will have to wait until later. Let’s wait for the ink to dry, the underwear to dry, the bed linen to dry, your eyes to dry before we decide upon what to do next.

I received a note from Chloë yesterday. She says she’s been on holiday but neither you nor I noticed. And now, returning in a jolly hat, she feels ignored and there is something appalling about having to live with the consequences of someone else’s stupidity. I have no idea what she’s talking about. Indeed, I don’t know who this Chloë person is. I can only assume the note was delivered to the wrong address.
