And the audience threw real tomatoes
Then retired to their beds.
I was there, although I was quite tired
After working all day at the greengrocer’s.

from THE REVIEW

I like to sit on park benches
between two lives and eavesdrop on
conversations. Buses and trams are okay too,
but usually they’re too jam-packed
with germs to be comfortable. Let loose
in rolling acres, to contrast all the openness
with inner solitude, and understanding how
happiness is temporary and conditional,
let’s vaudeville when we can.

APPROACHING SPRING

        after 春望 by Dù Fŭ

Plants will wake up
Birds will be busy

Messages from family and friends
Are the Sun

My hair is white and thin
I expected that

But I did not expect
Tears instead of Spring rain

Warning beacons on hilltops
The country is sick

Birds will be busy
Plants will wake up
